<text>Guilherme de la Rocque Rebello de Andrade was born in 1891, in Lisbon. He was a well-known Portuguese architect, especially during the first half of the 20th century. He was the son of Bento Rebello de Andrade and his wife Maria Emília de la Rocque, of French descent. He graduated from the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon. His brother was Carlos Rebello de Andrade, with whom he shared the signature of several emblematic works in Portugal. Their partnership would last until 1950. Together, they were one of the most active Portuguese architects from the 1920s to the 1940s. With the affirmation and rise of the modern movement, both brothers were put “out of the picture”, especially when considered the artistic, ideological and political motivations, or, in other words, their “traditionalist”, “nationalist” and “regime” architecture. Several discussions have animated the reflection on these two brothers and their role in 20th century Portuguese architecture, often ignored by a partial historiography.

His career went through not only the liberal exercise of his profession, but also the Lisbon City Council, the General Directorate of National Buildings between 1932 and 1934 and several private studios. The work of the two brothers is, according to Luís Soares Carneiro, divided into four periods, the first, in the early twenties, marked by small works, houses and annexes, the second marked by the victories in the competitions of the pavilions of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro and Seville, gaining some relevance in the national context, the third associated with the public works of the Estado Novo, a framework on which several architects were called to follow the dynamics of the new regime, and a fourth period already off the stage of the public sphere where the two brothers went on different ways, working each of them in a different direction. Therefore, his work is quite extensive, with most of his projects being signed together with his brother. Noteworthy are the Pavilion of Industries at the Exhibition of the Centenary of Brazil in 1922, later adapted to the Pavilion Carlos Lopes at Parque Eduardo VII, the Pavilion of Portugal at the Exhibition of Seville in 1929, the Naval School of Alfeite in 1928, the National Museum of Ancient Art in 1932, the reconstruction of the National Palace of Queluz after the fire of 1934, the Sacavém Agronomic Station in 1938, the Luminous Fountain in the Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques in 1938, the house on Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, which won them the Valmor Prize in 1939 and the Embassy of Portugal in Rio de Janeiro in 1946. He also signed several projects alone, namely the 1952 Nossa Senhora da Piedade neighborhood, of single-family houses and rural architecture, the reconstruction of the National Theater of D. Maria II in 1964, the Monument to the Dead of the Great War in 1931 and the restoration works of the National Theater of São Carlos in 1940. Contrary to the stereotype that pursued their career the architecture of the two brothers, although closely linked to the regime, always oscillated between modern architecture and traditionalist architecture, having played a central role, as was clear, in the Public Works policy of the Estado Novo.

In addition to the Valmor Prize, already mentioned, Guilherme Rebello de Andrade was also awarded twice. On May 10, 1929, he was made an Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada, associated with the Pavilion of Portugal project. In turn, on May 23, 1932 he was made Commander of the Military Order of Christ, associated with the Monument to the Deaths of the Great War. At the time of his death he was dedicated to the project for the reconstruction of the National Theater D. Maria II, in Lisbon. This work confirmed the end of the partnership between the two brothers, which had been waning throughout the 50s and 60s, precisely because they adopted new directions. Carlos started working with his nephew and Guilherme with his son, Ruy Rebello de Andrade, an architect who continued his father's work in rebuilding the Theater. Guilherme Rebello de Andrade died in 1969, he was 78 years old.</text>
