<text>Armando António Marques Rito was born in 1936. He is a Portuguese engineer, specialized in the construction of bridges. He studied and graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. At the same institution, he was assistant professor of Edgar Cardoso, in the chair of Bridges and Special Constructions. He was coordinating professor of ISEL’s (Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa) Civil Engineering Bridge Chair. He was also guest professor of that same chair at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

He already has an extensive list of public works across the world, a large majority of complex engineering works such as bridges. This is the case of the 1991 Bridge over the Arade River in Portimão, the 1997 César Gaviria Trujillo Viaduct in Colombia, where he was an engineering consultant, the 1997 Miguel Torga Bridge, the 1998 Vasco da Gama Bridge, in Lisbon, the 2007 Vila Pouca de Aguiar Viaduct, on the A24, the 2009 São Vicente Bridge in Guinea-Bissau, the 2009 April 4 Bridge over the Catumbela River in Angola and the 2012 Bridge over the Tua River.

In the private sector, he created the company Armando Rito Engenharia in 1982. This same company is specialized, among others, in the construction of bridges. He was a National Expert on the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) and was part of the group that wrote the 1st version of the EuroCode of Concrete Bridges. He was also a member of the work group “Bridges” of the Fédération Internationale du Béton (FIB). He is a member of the Order of Engineers, the Academy of Engineering and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). He was an Associate Member integrated in the Superior Council of Public Works and Transport.

He is also a guest speaker at national and international congresses and seminars. He has about 70 articles on bridges published in Portugal and abroad, including works published in international magazines, such as Construction des ponts sur le Rio Guadania et le Rio Arade au Portugal in 1993 with Fuzier and Câncio Martins, Le pont Vasco de Gama sur le Tage in 1998 with Vassord, Ello, Muller and Gausset, and Le pont sur l'Arade à Portimão en Algarve in 1993. In the awards field, in 1997 the Association Française pour la Construction (AFPC) awarded him its Annual Prize, in 2014 he received the Freyssinet Medal, in 2015 he received the Albert Caquot Prize and, finally, in 2009 the Associação Portuguesa para a Segurança e Conservação de Pontes (ASCP) awarded him its Gold Medal. Regarding the works in which he intervened, the I Ibero-American Biennial of Engineering and Architecture in 1998, awarded the Miguel Torga Bridge, in Régua, the 1st Engineering Prize and the II, in 2000, awarded the Vasco da Gama Bridge the 1st Engineering Award. In 2019 he was graced as a great officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.</text>
