<text>Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal was born in Chaves, in the Vila-Real district, on December 10, 1885. Son of Joaquim Maria Evangelista do Carvalhal and Maria do Carmo Carvalhal, he was an important Portuguese civil engineer. Among the projects that he intervened are the Faculdade de Letras, the Faculdade de Direito and the Reitoria of the Universidade de Lisboa, being him a member of the Administrative Commission of the New University Buildings. Also noteworthy are his interventions at the Hospital de Santa Maria, in Lisbon, where he did the study and calculation of the engineering project and construction contract, and at the Hospital de São João, in Porto.

However, one of his outstanding works is the fábrica de briquetes of Mina do Espadanal. The architectural and structural design of the factory was developed by the engineering office of Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal, similar to the design of volumes and elevations of the main body of the project of A Nacional factory, in Lisbon, by Pardal Monteiro, built almost simultaneously, between 1948 and 1952. This project is a unique work, due to its architectural quality and technological innovation in the construction of mining accessories in Portugal, whose uniqueness is due to the investment of important public economic and technical resources in the exploration of the Rio Maior lignite deposit as a strategic fuel reserve for the Lisbon region during World War II and post-war. The value of the architectural design of the fábrica de briquetes was recognized by the Order of Architects in inventing it in the Portuguese Architecture Survey of the 20th Century, held in 2006. Out of a total of 6112 nationally inventoried works, the Mina do Briquettes factory was one of 12 selected buildings in the municipality of Rio Maior.

He was a student at the Military College in Lisbon. One of the disciplines that pleased him most and became a hobby for the rest of his life was shooting. He was even awarded in several shooting events as alumno premiado. Eduardo Evangelista do Carvalhal died on August 4, 1972, at the age of 86, in Lisbon.</text>
