The founder and president was Engineer Henrique Burnay Leitão, although it started with three other shareholders, the brothers D. Rodrigo de Castro Pereira (1887-1983) and Nuno José van Zeller de Castro Pereira (1907-1986) and António Casanovas Augustine. Initially created with limited liability, in 1971 the company became a public limited company. Since its beginnings, its aim was the elaboration of the project and the consequent construction of major works in the country's infrastructure collection, especially when talking about the “Estado Novo” and the Public Works policy inherent to the regime. This pattern would also be seen in democracy, from 1974. The internationalization of the company occurred, like so many others, due to the need to build the overseas territory, acting mainly in Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique, where the company had delegations. Large companies as this one are always associated with great technicians. Several men helped build the legacy of Construções Técnicas, including engineer José Brigham da Silva, who opened and managed the company's Cape Verde Delegation, engineer José Ricciardi and his brother, who started and directed the execution of the Silos in Porto do Lobito in 1952, engineer Rui de Sousa, who managed the Delegation of Mozambique between the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, Henrique Francisco Martins, who managed the Delegation of Angola when the execution of the Cabinda Pier started, engineers Virgílio Lopes Cabrita and Oliveira Neves, who introduced modern design, planning, budgeting, execution and control techniques to the company, and engineer Manuel Rocha, who later became chair at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) and served as president of the Order of Engineers. On the other hand, with regard to the company's portfolio, there are several works of renown that can be associated with Construções Técnicas, namely the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon, the reconstruction of the National Theater D. Maria II also in Lisbon, the Marina of Vilamoura in Algarve, the Alto da Boa Viagem Node, the Ports of Leixões in Matosinhos, Luanda and Lobito in Angola, Beira and Lourenço Marques in Mozambique and Porto Grande, Porto Novo and the Porto do Vale dos Cavaleiros in Cape Verde, the Sacavém viaduct, the number six hangar at the Lisbon Airport, the Luanda Water Treatment Station, one of the company's first works, and the Raiva and Aguieira dams in Penacova and Corte Bique dam in Odemira. Construções Técnicas established links with the world's major construction companies, securing a Swedish patent for the sliding of silos and chimneys, which led to the forefront in the technique of sliding in the country, applying it to the numerous bulk silos, cement factories, chimneys, both in Portugal and in the Colonies. With the April 1974 revolution, the company drastically changed its course. With the alienation of the company's management and with state intervention, without being nationalized, Construções Técnicas took time to recover the volume of business they had previously had. The company ended up not surviving the turn of the millennium, having filed for bankruptcy in 1998. It was founded in 1941 by Artur Alves Ribeiro, its founder. However, the company had already a background in the area. Artur Alves Ribeiro was working individually since 1931. With an initial capital of 500 escudos, the company embarked on public works, in particular roads and airfields, despite the economic recession that affected Europe after World War II. The first works, which still refer to when Artur Alves Ribeiro worked in a personal capacity, lasted until 1941, when the company had already been founded. These were earthworks, sewers, pavements and the construction of a viaduct over the existing railway line of Avenida Gago Coutinho and Avenida Almirante Reis, in Lisbon, commissioned by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and the Junta Autónoma das Estradas. Orders were quickly directed to other types of construction, namely airports – the Lisbon Airport in 1942, the Montijo Airport in 1948 and the Sal Airport in 1949 – or even student complexes, which accompanied the company's growth over these two centuries – the Maristas College of Carcavelos in 1963, the Catholic University of Lisbon in 1968, the College of St. John of Brito in 1999, the College of St. Thomas in 2006, the College Valsassina in 2007 and the new campus of Nova School of Business & Economics in 2017. Throughout the century Alves Ribeiro was present in several public works and buildings of great importance for to country and which are still symbols of the history of construction in Portugal, such as Avenida de Ceuta, the renovation of Parque Eduardo VII, the headquarters of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the two stadiums of Sporting Clube de Portugal, the Amoreiras shopping complex and, more recently, the MAAT building. In the 1950s, two sons of the founder, Vítor Silva Ribeiro and José Alves Ribeiro, joined the company and continued its management, having been linked to several works from the 70's. In 1983, the company Mundicenter was created, with the goal of developing the business area of the shopping centers and its consecutive exploration, including, for exemple, Amoreiras Shopping and Oeiras Park. Still in the 1980s, in 1987, the company Alrisa was created, responsible for the promotion and management of real estate under lease and sale. This company owns, for example, the Amoreiras towers and other buildings on Avenida da República, Praça de Alvalade or Estrada de Benfica. In the 90's, Banco Invest was created, dedicated to the areas of Corporate finance, Private Banking, Brokerage and Credit. Finally, in the new century, the Alves Ribeiro Group, which started to compose all these companies, was internationalized. In 2006 a construction company is established in Angola. In 2012, the company got its first project in Brazil, winning an infrastructure in Florianópolis. Son of João Ramalheira, he studied until the high school in Aveiro, Viana do Castelo and Lisbon. In the capital, he studied at the Colégio Francês and showed great skills in Mathematics. From there he went to Belgium, where, at the University of Ghent, he graduated in Civil Engineering with a specialization in reinforced concrete. Bringing technical knowledge from abroad, having been a student of Gustave Magnel, expert in reinforced concrete and pre-stressed construction techniques, engineer Ângelo Ramalheira was one of the main responsible for raising awareness of the engineer figure and his importance in collaborating with the purpose of creating large spaces with large span roofs, the building of terraces that characterized the pure cubic volumes that urban modernity at the time demanded. Returning to Portugal, after graduation, he began to work in offices of competence, moving the attention of those around him by the exceptional practical sense revealed in solving problems. Construction began to seduce him and he was already a building engineer responsible for hard calculations, such as large yield blocks, multi-storey garages, and concert halls. One of his first works in Portugal was precisely the mythical headquarters of the newspaper “O Diário de Notícias”, on Avenida da Liberdade, in Lisbon. In this same work he deepened a friendship that would prove lasting with the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, author of the building project. He left an extensive work portefolio, from the Instituto Português de Oncologia and Hospital de São João, true standards of civil construction, to the boldest constructions, such as the Companhia Industrial de Portugal e das Colónias, where sliding cellular molds were used, until speed disconcerting with the construction of the new Sports Pavillion of the Palácio de Cristal in Porto. Other important works of him, authentic marks of 20th century architecture and engineering, are the Ritz Hotel in Lisbon, the Atlantic Hotel in Cascais, the Cinearte and Monumental Theater in Lisbon, and the Cine-Avenida Theater in Aveiro. He was also a pioneer in the use of prestressed in Portugal, used for the first time in a structure of the Companhia Portuguesa de Siderurgia, in Leça do Balio. In 1950, the Portuguese Government, at the invitation of the European Organization for Economic Cooperation (OECE), asked him to represent the country in the centenary of the United States Association of Civil Engineers. Closer to the end of the century, when the company was already part of a larger group, SOPOL continued to do major public works such as the Almada Shopping Center, the Mooring Pier at Farol do Bugio and the new ceiling of the Campo Pequeno Bullring, the last two in Lisbon. In 1996, Grupo A. Silva & Silva acquired a majority stake in SOPOL. From that moment, the company became part of the group, being responsible for the area of civil construction and public works. Three years later, in 1999, SOPOL signed a partnership agreement with Dragados Obras y Proyectos S.A., which allowed the Spanish company to operate in the Portuguese construction and public works market. Birth Date 1913-06-08 Birthplace Celorico de Basto Death Date 1995-08-21 Occupation Entrepreneur Biographical Text Manuel António da Mota was born on June 8, 1913, in Codeçoso, on the council of Celorico de Basto. He came from a humble family dedicated to agriculture. He married Maria Amália Guedes Queiroz de Vasconcelos in 1946, resulting from this marriage four children, Maria Manuela, Maria Teresa, Antonio and Maria Paula. After completing his primary education, due to his father inability to continue working, he started to manage the family farms. Determined to define his own life, in 1930 he began working as a pointer in a construction company. Years later he would become general manager and manager, starting his way in the field of entrepreneurship and construction. The following steps were made with family members. With Joaquim Fonseca, his brother-in-law, and Joaquim Pereira da Silva, he creates the company “Industrias Reunidas do Tâmega”, which acquires a sawmill company in Amarante dedicated to the extraction of bagasse oils. However, in 1946, he founded with Joaquim Fonseca and their brothers a new construction company, “Construtora do Tâmega”. Days later it was the turn of "Mota & Company". With a difference of 15 days, these two companies were founded. The partners were the same, with slight changes, since in the case of “Mota & Companhia” Manuel António da Mota was a majority partner followed by the partners Joaquim Fonseca and Virgílio Martins Ribeiro. They were two families, Mota and Fonseca. They had different goals. The "Construtora do Tâmega" to do public works and construction and the "Mota & Company" to dedicate to forest and agricultural exploitation. With the creation of the two companies, the first went to work in Portugal and the second in Angola. He went to Angola and settled there. He allowed the company to always be seen as an Angolan company, without problems with the government or with the liberation movements. At the time of Angola's independence, it was one of the few groups that continued to work there. The difficulties remained during this period, as the war problems and political and social upheavals made most of Mota & Companhia's partners want to leave the Angolan market. Manuel António da Mota held his ground and, buying the shares of the other partners, rebuilt the company and restarted from scratch in the mid-1970s. In this country, he left his mark, through the company, in works such as Luanda Airport and Luso-Henrique de Carvalho road. This decade is also remembered by the return to Portugal for the Lucefecit dam project. In 1977, the year in which Manuel António da Mota and his children acquired almost all the capital of “Mota & Companhia”, the company won the important public tender for the regularization of Baixo Mondego. Mota & Companhia became a public limited company in 1987, launching that year a public offer to sell part of its capital. Before he died, the founder of the company distributed the shareholder positions among his children, leaving the position of majority shareholder to his son Antonio. In 1982, he was awarded the Order of Agricultural and Industrial Merit, in recognition of his hard work as a businessman working for the development of Portugal. In 1995, when the company was growing and becoming increasingly international, Manuel António da Mota died on August 21, leaving a legacy in the history of construction and public works in Portugal and abroad. In 1929 he married Maria de Lurdes de Vasconcelos and Sá Guerreiro Nuno, having six children, Maria Augusta, Maria Amalia, João, Maria Clara, José and Nuno. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. However, his career was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit, having founded one of the most important public works and construction companies in Portugal. He gained great financial autonomy on an individual level with the construction of the Lisboa-Caxias highway. As an engineer he directed many other works such as Magos Dam and continued, even after founding a construction company, to oversee various projects, such as Castelo de Bode Dam or even the Cabril Dam. At the age of 39, in 1947, he founded the company "Sociedade de Empreitadas Moniz da Maia, Duarte & Vaz Guedes, Lda.", together with Bernardo Ernesto Moniz da Maia. This was a smart move as a process of public investment began in Portugal as part of the economic recovery after World War II. They created the company so that they could compete for the Castelo de Bode Dam contest, a work that they would eventually win and that became the company's first major construction. For several years, Dams were the company's specialty, having subsequently extended this field to bridges, viaducts and other road and rail infrastructure. In 1952, the company undergoes several structural changes, changing its name to “Moniz da Maia & Vaz Guedes, Lda.”. In 1965, the company becomes a public limited company and in 1970 it is fully controlled by the Vaz Guedes family, which changes the company name to "Sociedade de Empreitadas Somague, S.A.R.L.". He was a member of the Governing Bodies of the Order of Engineers, in whose capacity he was a member of the Corporate Chamber during the IV legislature, between 1953 and 1957. During that period, he belonged to the XII section of administrative interests, particularly to the fourth subsection of Public Works and Communication. He drafted several proposals, including the Junta Antónoma das Estradas Financing Plan for the period of 1956 to 1970, the reorganization of the Junta Antónoma of Porto and Aveiro, the regulation of the exercise of Public Works contractor, the second part of the Gafanha colonization project and the legal regime for the works of “Fomento Hidroagrícola”. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Regional Association of Civil Construction and Public Works, returning to the Corporate Chamber as the employer's representative, between 1963 and 1965. In this period, he belonged to section V, specifically the second subsection of Construction, Glass and Ceramics. This time he also drafted several proposals, including the extension to the private construction industry of the disciplinary measures applicable to public works contractors and the project of the Interim Development Plan for the years 1965 to 1967, both on the Continent and in the islands. He was one of the most important and most successful entrepreneurs in the construction sector in Portugal. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). He joined as partner, together with Simões Cúcio, at Engil, in 1953, a year after the foundation of the construction company by Fernando José Saraiva and António Lopes de Almeida. He led to a refoundation of the company, being for four decades responsible for the presidency of the company. In 1978, the engineer started Engil's internationalization project in Venezuela. The contractor partnered with Caracas-based company Retosa, which allowed it to build several factories and, for example, Guri Dam. However, a less favorable economic environment conditioned this same internationalization, causing the process to be interrupted and only resumed years later. Engil reached a new milestone in its life in 1987, the year that Valadas Fernandes decided to create Engil SGPS. In 1989, Engil entered in Angola, in 1993 in Mozambique, in 1994 in Germany and in 1996 in Peru. Finally, in 2000, after the public takeover bid launched by the Mota family, which led to the creation of Mota-Engil, Valadas Fernandes left Engil. He served as chairman of the Advisory Board and Chairman of the Assembly, first from 1985 to 1987 and then from 1991 to 1993, of the Associação Nacional de Empreiteiros de Obras Públicas (ANEOP) and was a member of the general board of the Mário Soares Foundation. In his political career he also held positions of great importance. He was a member of the board of the Grémio Regional dos Industriais de Construção Civil e Obras Públicas do Sul, in which he was a member of the Corporate Chamber, representing the employers. He was also the vice-chairman of the Secção de Construção, Vidro e Cerâmica da Corporação da Indústria. At last, he was deputy to the Director General of Development of the Ministério do Ultramar, having participated in the X and XI legislatures in the industry section. He founded the Alves Ribeiro Group in 1941 but was already working individually as Artur Alves Ribeiro. He did not reach success easily or quickly. The economic recession in the years following World War II affected the generality of Europe, and Marshall's plan, created by the United States of America to aid Europe's economic recovery, would not begin until 1947. However, during the following decades, the company was able to grow and build important works for the prestige of Alves Ribeiro and of great relevance in the national context.
