<text>Cândido Palma de Melo was born in 1922. He was an important Portuguese architect, whose work is affirmed in the framework of the third generation of national modernism. He was the father of three daughters, the two youngest with cerebral palsy. After studying at Casa Pia in Lisbon, he graduated in architecture at the Escola de Belas Artes of Lisbon in 1947. He then attended the First National Congress of Architecture in 1948, presenting a communication on the teaching of architecture in Portugal, along with his colleague Conceição Silva. In the professional field, he began to collaborate in the Keil do Amaral studio between 1945 and 1951. However, in 1955 he decided to set up a studio of his own with Artur Pires Martins. During his career the presence of foreign influences such as Le Corbusier are evident.

A convinced modernist, he contributed to the “Regulamento Geral das Edificações Urbanas” (RGEU), creating the guidelines that served the current decree of Law 163/06. In the 1950s, he was invited by the Lisbon City Council's Urbanization Studies Office, together with Nuno Teotóneo Pereira, Sommer Ribeiro and Pedro Falcão e Cunha, to give architectural meaning to a whole new field of experimentation. Then arose the constructions of the North and South Olivais, in Lisbon, thus applying in Portugal the Corbusian spirit of the Athens Charter. However, his portfolio is quite extensive and his areas of intervention are not restricted to Portugal. He designed the Lourenço Marques Airport in Mozambique between 1953 and 1963, the Pina Manique Stadium in 1954, the Bonfim Stadium in 1962, the Calouste Gulbenkian Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Center in 1965, the Beira Aerogare in Mozambique, the Sal Aerogare in Cape Verde, and Mormagão Aerogare in India between 1963 and 1968, the Varandas da Rocha Tourist Complex in Portimão, between 1981 and 2001, the Yellow and the Manchester Building in Lisbon, between 1977 and 1984, the "Sulfrias" Tourist Complex in Vila Real de Santo António, in 1990, and the Casapiana Solidarity Association Complex in Lisbon, in 1999.

Palma de Melo was the author of the Calouste Gulbenkian Cerebral Palsy Rehabilitation Center (CRPCCG) project, inaugurated in 1970. He was chairman of the former Portuguese Cerebral Palsy Association from 1980 to 1996 and played a major role in the decentralization process of this association. He designed more Rehabilitation Centers and guided some installation adaptations of the Centers elsewhere. He designed homes adapted for people with disabilities in Porto and Lisbon and created a set of furniture that expressed his concern about social inclusion issues, designed to be used interchangeably by people with or without disabilities. Many of this highly functional furniture is still used today in CRPCCG.

His career as an architect allowed him to make friends with outstanding figures in the Arts, Culture, Sciences and Politics such as Bento de Jesus Caraça, Manuel Mendes, Keil do Amaral, Teotónio Pereira, Abel Manta, Rafael Botelho, Lopes Graça, José Gomes Ferreira, Cardoso Pires, Pires Martins, Jorge Chaves, Gandra, Martins Correia, Gil Teixeira Lopes, Matilde Marçal, Maria da Graça Andrada, Natália Correia, among many others. A pioneer in the fight against architectural barriers, as is already clear, in the early 1990s Palma de Melo received the Helios Award, given by the European Commission for his work on accessibility. He was also named Honorary Member of the Association of Portuguese Architects in 1994. Cândido Palma de Melo died in 2002 at the age of 80.</text>

              <text>
Álvaro Joaquim Melo Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos on June 25, 1933. He is the Portuguese architect with the most visibility and international prestige. Admiring the American organic Frank Lloyd Wright, the Austrian hierarchic Adolf Loos and the Finnish naturalist Alvar Aalto, Álvaro Siza Vieira discovered a unique identity path in the conception and construction. Assuming a modernist and avant-garde perspective, noticeable in its architectural forms and meanings, he did not forget the Portuguese traditions and gave them special attention, especially with regard to its minuteness and rigor. He is the son of Júlio Siza Vieira and his wife Cacilda Ermelinda Camacho Carneiro de Melo. His marriage to Maria Antónia Marinho Leite resulted in two children, Joana Marinho Leite Siza Vieira and the architect Álvaro Leite Siza Vieira. Between 1949 and 1955, he studied architecture at the Escola de Belas Artes do Porto. He was a collaborator of Fernando Távora between 1955 and 1958, with whom he developed a strong friendship and creative complicity.

He is the author of numerous national projects, including the Boa Nova Tea House in Leça da Palmeira, the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, the University of Aveiro Library, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the Portuguese pavilion for EXPO'98, the Chiado area reconstruction plan and the emblematic Church of Marco de Canaveses. At the international stage he also affirmed his presence. Among many projects, some stand out. In the Netherlands, in 1985, he directed the Schliderswij Zone 5 Recovery Plan from Hague. In Spain, he outlined the projects for the Barcelona Olympic Villa Meteorological Center, the Galician Museum of Contemporary Art and the Faculty of Information Sciences in Santiago de Compostela. In Germany, he was also responsible for the work of the Schlesisches Tor Kreuzberg station in Berlin. In Italy he carried out the recovery of the Campo di Marte in Venice. In Austria, he remodelled the Winkler casino and cafe in Salzburg. In Brazil, he left his mark at the Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre. However, his works are found in many other places, from America to Asia, through other countries such as Belgium, France, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Cape Verde, or even the Vatican, where he was invited by Pope John Paul II to the project of a church. His career is linked to major works of architecture excellence in Portugal and around the world, but also, especially in the post-Twenty-fifth of April years, to a social housing action, namely in Porto, having led interventions aimed at integrating degraded areas in the architectural-landscape experience of the city of Porto.

He taught at the Escola de Belas Artes do Porto between 1966 and 1969 and returned to this school as Assistant Professor of "Construction" in 1976. He taught at the Faculdade de Arquitetura of the Universidade do Porto, where he gave his last class in October 2003. He is also a visiting professor at the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University in the United States, and the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia.

He received numerous awards. In 1987, he received the Architecture Award from the Association of Portuguese Architects. In 1982, the Portuguese Section of the International Association of Art Critics awarded him the Architecture of the Year Award. In 1988, he received the Architectural Gold Medal from the Madrid College of Architects, the Alvar Aalto Foundation Medal, the Prince of Wales from Harvard University and the European Architecture Prize from the Commission of the European Communities / Mies van der Rohe Foundation. In 1992 he was awarded the Pritzer Prize for his work as a whole, one of his life milestones. In the same year he was made Grand Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada of Portugal. In 1993 he received the National Architecture Award. In 1999 he was made Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. Henrique of Portugal. In 1996, 2000 and 2006 he received the Secil Architecture Award. In 2001, he was awarded the Wolf Foundation award and received the Alexandre Herculano National Architecture Award. The year 2002 was full of awards, as well as the following years, until 2005, the year the city keys of Porto were handed over to him. In 2008 he received the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture from the Royal Institute of British Architects. In 2010, he received the Luso-Spanish Art and Culture Award. In 2012 he received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Architecture Biennale, other of his life milestones. In 2015, he received the "Life and Work Award" from the Portuguese Society of Authors. Finally, in 2017 was made Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction of Portugal.

<text>Francisco Conceição Silva was born in 1922, in Lisbon. He married twice, having four children from the first marriage and a daughter from the second. He graduated from the Escola de Belas Artes, in Lisbon, in 1949. His first experiences in the job market were at Adelino Nunes atelier and the Federation of Pension Funds. Shortly after, he created with José Bastos an architecture society centered on single-family housing projects, particularly for the middle and upper classes. He created a personal studio in 1953, where he initially made furniture designs. These would be exhibited along with the works of Julio Pomar, Cherub Lapa, Sa Nogueira and Jorge Vieira. Influenced by modern Brazilian architecture, he dedicated himself to the design of dwellings and commercial spaces that at the same time deviated and came close to Le Corbusier's lines of thought. One of his main concerns, expressed in his projects, was the constant participation in international debates on a practical scale on the evolution of global architecture, resorting wherever possible to the modern movement, vernacular architecture, Scandinavian empiricism and brutalism. He was a true promoter of interdisciplinarity in the area of architecture, contacting with several other areas.

He met with the biggest names in national culture, especially in the context of his studio, a space that served as a “school” for several generations of artists. We talk necessarily about Maurício de Vasconcelos, his partner, Tomás Taveira, Arsenio Cordeiro, Pedro Viera de Almeida, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, Sá Nogueira, Estrela Faria, Almada Negreiros, among others. He designed several emblematic buildings in the national context, namely the Hotel do Mar between 1960 and 1963 in Sesimbra, the Serra da Estrela Hotel, the Castil Building in Lisbon and the Hotel da Balaia between 1965 and 1967 in the Algarve, among many other works - of note are the shops and commercial spaces and, for example, the Alfragide towers that marked the beginning of the career of his architecture studio. He was responsible for several urbanization plans, namely Évora, Loures, Portimão and the Tróia Peninsula Tourism Plan.

In January 1975, months before the April 25 revolution, he suffered an attack on Dafundo, at his home. He was seriously injured. In March he left, at the age of 53-year-old, to Brazil, not a month before receiving the news that he would be on the COPCON (Continuing Operational Command) lists. Oddly enough, his political sympathy was not with the authoritarian government, but with the opposition side. However, Conceição Silva was an uncomfortable architect for his peers in the highly politicized environment that preceded the revolution. He challenged the business organization of what was perhaps the largest studio in the country, with an enviable order book, with clients in the economic, cultural and political spheres, such as António Valadas Fernandes, Amália Rodrigues and Rogério Martins, Secretary of State of Industry at the time of Marcello Caetano. In the American continent, his architecture was always represented as an updated attitude of experimenting with the themes of revised modernity, adapted to the place, the materials and the construction processes, in a line of continuity with the houses that had been built in Portugal in the 60s. In Brazil, he projected essentially single-family dwellings for a wealthy bourgeoisie, ensuring a comfortable environment for the domestic life.

He was president of the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes between 1963 and 1970. He was the founder of the Sociedade de Gravura and head of the Sindicato Nacional dos Arquitetos, where he launched the Inquérito à Arquitetura Regional Portuguesa of 1955. He was awarded several times, namely in 1987, posthumously received, with the tourist merit medal awarded by the Directorate General of Tourism. Francisco Conceição Silva died of a heart attack on January 23, 1982, just before his 60th birthday.</text>

<text>Anselmo Fernandez Rodriguez was a Portuguese architect, player, coach and football manager, son of Spanish parents from Zamora. He was born on 21 August, 1918, in Lisbon. He started his football career in 1933 at Sporting Clube de Portugal. He would finish it, still in Alvalade, in 1944, at the age of 27. From football he moved to rugby, completing also a degree in architecture.

His career as an architect stands out for his collaborations with Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and António Pardal Monteiro, with whom he collaborated in the works of the Tivoli Hotel, in Lisbon. He was responsible for the changes to the initial project with António Pardal Monteiro. Also with António Pardal Monteiro he collaborated in the projects of the Faculdade de Letras, Faculdade de Direito and also the Reitoria of the Universidade de Lisboa. He worked with Jorge Ferreira Chaves and Eduardo Goulartt Medeiros in the project of the Florida Hotel, in Lisbon. One of his most important works, however, was the José Alvalade Stadium, which opened in 1956. With a special connection to the club and the building, he declined any payment for the project. He did not live to see the stadium he designed be replaced for the Alvalade XXI Stadium, inaugurated in 2003.

As a football coach, he won the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup with Sporting Clube de Portugal, which he couched on four occasions between 1962 and 1966. He later coached CUF Barreiro in the Portuguese first division but saw his career interrupted by a brutal car accident. He also had time to dedicate himself to arbitration and win a prize. He was included in the team of the international judge Joaquim Campos. Anselmo Fernandez Rodriguez died on January 19, 2000, in Madrid.</text>

<text>António Luis Facco Viana Barreto was born in Lisbon on February 15, 1924. He was a Portuguese landscape architect. His school career includes the Parisian College and the Military College, both in Lisbon. He graduated in Forestry and Landscape Architecture in 1952 at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) in Lisbon. Throughout his career, he developed works at different scales of the landscape, such as private garden, public park, road installation, restoration of recreational farms, tourist village project and land management. Like Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and others, António Viana Barreto was also a disciple of Francisco Caldeira Cabral.

His works were of great importance for the evolution of the Portuguese landscape, namely the surrounding garden of the Belém Tower in 1954, the Viseu Park Project between 1954 and 1955, and later in 2003, the Bonfim Park between 1954 and 1956, the project for the Cidade Universitária de Lisboa with Ilídio Alves de Araújo in 1955, the National Library Garden and the terraces of the Ritz Hotel with Álvaro Dentinho in 1956, the Guimarães Castle surrounding in 1957, the SACOR neighborhood in 1959 with Álvaro Dentinho, the Batalha Monastery surrounding in 1965, the gardens of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles from 1959 to 1969, both invited to participate by the winning team of the contest for the Gulbenkian Calouste Foundation Headquarters and Museum, Ruy Jervis Athouguia, Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa, the refurbishment of Quinta das Conchas e Lilases at Lumiar in 1980 and Quinta da Penha Longa between 1985 and 1991. Finally, he was also responsible for the Algarve Landscape Planning in 1969 and the Troia Peninsula Planning between 2002 and 2012.

António Viana Barreto also had a career in Public Administration, being the first landscape architect to work directly from the state. He held various positions. He was Head of the Studies and Planning Division of the Directorate General of Urban Planning from 1973 to 1978, Head of Landscape Planning Service of the Planning Studies Division in 1978, Director of Physical Planning Studies Services of the Directorate General of Urban Planning at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works from 1979 to 1981, and, finally, General Director of Planning at the Ministry of Quality of Life from 1981 to 1987. It’s owed to him, along with other names like Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, the first steps in creating legal landscape protection tools such as the National Agricultural Reserve, the National Ecological Reserve or the Spatial Planning Plans. Parallel to this career in the public sphere he developed a private activity. Between 1983 and 2012 he was managing partner of the company Projectos de Espaços Verdes, Lda. He was a visiting professor in the areas of Landscape Planning and Spatial Planning at the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa between 1979 and 1980, at the Universidade de Évora between 1982 and 1984 and at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia between 1984 and 1988.

Together with Ruy Jervis Athouguia, Alberto Pessoa, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and Pedro Cid, he won the 1975 Valmor Award for the architectural ensemble of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Headquarters, Gardens and Museum. In 2009 he was distinguished with the Quercus Prize and in 2012 he was awarded the “Personality of Landscape Architecture” prize. António Viana Barreto died on May 12, 2012.</text>

<text>Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles was born in Lisbon on May 25, 1922. He is a Portuguese landscape architect, agronomist engineer, ecologist and politician. He graduated in Agricultural Engineering and completed the Free Course in Landscape Architecture at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (ISA) in 1950. As a liberal professional he developed a set of projects at various scales of the landscape, such as private and public gardens, private and public parks, green corridors, road implantation, quarry restoration, restoration of recreational farms, landscape integration of factories, rural and territorial planning.

He began his professional life in the services of the Lisbon City Council. From 1951 to 1953, he was part of the Arborization and Gardening Bureau, becoming in 1955 the landscape architect of the CML Urbanization Studies Office, headed by engineer Guimarães Lobato, where he remained until 1960. From 1971 to 1974 he directed, still as a landscape architect, the Housing Development Fund's Biophysical and Green Space Planning Sector. The most striking project of his career is probably the garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which he signed with António Viana Barreto and earned them the Valmor Award of 1975. Other projects, however, also marked his career as a landscape architect, namely the Alcântara Valley and Benfica Radial, the Chelas Valley, the Peripheral Park, the Monsanto Green Corridor, the Integration into the Lisbon Main Green Structure of the Eastern and Western Riverside, the public space of the Estacas Neighborhood in Alvalade , the gardens of São Jerónimo Chapel in Restelo, the vegetation of the hill of São Jorge Castle and the Amália Rodrigues Garden, next to Eduardo VII Park.

He also dedicated part of his life to politics. He was a member of the Catholic Agrarian and Rural Youth member, a youth structure linked to the Portuguese Catholic Action. He was always a strong opponent of Estado Novo and Salazar, having founded and encouraged various parties and commissions, such as the Independent Monarchists Movement, the Electoral Commission for Democratic Unity (CEUD), the result of a coalition with the lists of Mario Soares in 1969, and the Monarchic Convergence movement. In 1958 he even supported the candidacy of Humberto Delgado. It was after the April 25 revolution that he began to hold important political positions, founding also the Monarchic People's Party. He was Undersecretary of State for the Environment in the I, II and III Provisional Governments, the first by Adelino da Palma Carlos and the next two by Vasco Gonçalves. He continued Secretary of State in the First Constitutional Government, headed by Mario Soares. In 1979, he joined Francisco Sá Carneiro in the formation of the Democratic Alliance, a coalition through which he was elected deputy to the Assembly of the Republic, consecutively, in the 1979, 1980 and 1983 legislatures. Between 1981 and 1983 he was Minister of State and Quality of Life of the 7th Constitutional Government of Francisco Pinto Balsemão. During his ministry, he assumed a leading role in establishing a regime on land use and spatial planning by creating protected areas of the Agricultural Reserve, National Ecological Reserve and the bases of the Municipal Master Plan. In 1985 he was City Councillor of Lisbon for the Earth Programme. In the same year he returns to the Assembly of the Republic, now as an independent deputy, elected on the lists of the Socialist Party (PS). In 1993, he founded the Earth Party Movement, whose presidency left in 2007.

He taught at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, becoming a disciple of Francisco Caldeira Cabral, pioneer of landscape architecture in Portugal. With this teacher, he published the book A Árvore em Portugal, a reference work on tree species in the country. He created at the Universidade de Évora, in the 1990s, degrees in Landscape Architecture and Biophysical Engineering. In this institution he was Full Professor, from 1976 to 1992, is Emeritus Professor and received, in 1994, the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa. In April 2013, he was awarded the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Prize, the most important international distinction in this field, which is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in landscape architecture. In 2016, at the IndieLisboa film festival, it was presented the documentary A Vossa Terra - paisagens de Gonçalo Ribeiro Teles by director João Mário Grilo. He has been decorated several times. He obtained on October 31, 1969, from President Américo Thomaz, the rank of Officer of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada, on April 6, 1988, from President Mário Soares, the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Cristo, on 10 June 1990, by President Mário Soares, Grand Cross of the Order of Liberdade, and on May 25, 2017, by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D. <text>Alberto Pessoa was born on April 15, 1919, in Figueira da Foz. In Coimbra, he graduated from high school. In his free time, he devoted himself to painting, having in 1927 his works exhibited for the first time. In 1933, he held another exhibition in Coimbra with Arlindo Vicente. He moved to Lisbon and, in 1942, worked with Lucínio Cruz in the Works Plan Office of Praça do Império, under the guidance of Cottinelli Telmo. In 1943 he graduated from Architecture at the Escola de Belas Artes, in Lisbon. He would return to this school, between 1953 and 1962, to be assistant professor in the project chair of Luís Cristino da Silva.

Between 1942 and 1945 he participated in several projects for the Cidade Universitária of Coimbra, such as the remodeling of the Central Library of the Faculdade de Letras. Also in 1942 he designed the extra-school centers for the Mocidade Portuguesa. In 1945 he designed the restaurant and garden arrangement of Campo Grande. In 1947, he designed the Cantante da Mota house in Restelo, a work of traditional moulds. In 1947 he worked on a team coordinated by Faria da Costa responsible for the construction and urban plans of Avenida Paris and Praça Pasteur, examples of a transitional urbanism and architecture, with semi-open blocks, rear harnessed for gardens and collective equipment, constituting these experiences Lisbon's first meaningful break with the traditional architecture. With Keil do Amaral he designed several houses and, between 1947 and 1955, equipment for the parks of Monsanto and Eduardo VII, such as the Monsanto Cemetery, the Estufa Fria, the Montes Claros Restaurant and the open-air theatre from Monsanto. That year, he opened his own studio on Avenida Guerra Junqueiro. In 1953, when his studio moved to Avenida João Crisóstomo and welcomed the architect João Abel Manta, he designed the Alvito Children's Park. In 1955 he designed and planned a housing development on Avenida Infante Santo, in Lisbon, with Hernâni Gandra and João Abel Manta. This was a project for the Avenue consisting of multifamily housing, offices, shops, cafes and public facilities, which would be arranged along the entire avenue. The housing complex had an innovative and functional character, the pinnacle of modern architecture. Between 1958 and 1959 he designed the Coimbra Academic Association, which included the Headquarters and the University Stadium. Between 1959 and 1969, together with Pedro Cid and Ruy Jervis d 'Athouguia, he designed the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Headquarters and Museum, considered one of the best works of the twentieth century in Portugal. His activity did not stop there. In 1961 he designed the Porto Autosilo and in 1962 he designed the Areeiro Municipal Swimming Pool. Between 1965 and 1967, he made the Agualva-Cacém Urbanization Plan and the Mira-Sintra Economic Houses Grouping Project. At last, in 1979, he made the Algueirão-Mem Martins Urbanization Plan.

He was one of the directors of Arquitetura magazine and a consultant to the Universidade de Coimbra Commission. He was also a member of the board of the Sindicato Nacional dos Arquitetos, in the presidencies of Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, between 1948 and 1950, and Inácio Perez Fernandes, between 1951 and 1956. Between 1946 and 1950, he is part of the ICAT group (Iniciativas Culturais Arte e Técnica), where he discussed ideas with renowned architects such as Francisco Keil do Amaral, João Guilherme Faria da Costa, João Simões, Miguel Simões Jacobetty Rosa, Celestino Joaquim de Abreu Castro, Hernani Guimarães Gandra and Raúl Chorão Ramalho. Together with many of these names, he presented at the I National Congress of Architecture the project O Alojamento Coletivo, highlighting the advantages of building in height for the resolution of economic housing. He was a consultant architect for Figueira da Foz City Hall for about 17 years, where he worked with the architect Mário Pereira da Silva. He was responsible for the General Plan for Urbanization of Figueira da Foz, in the 60's and its revision in 1980.

He won the Valmor Prize in 1950 with the Cantante da Mota house in Restelo and in 1975, together with Pedro Cid and Ruy Jervis d 'Athouguia, for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Headquarters and Museum. He was also awarded the 1956 Lisbon Municipal Architecture Prize by Block No. 2 of No. 70 Avenida Infante Santo. On 31 October 1969 he was made officer of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada. Alberto Pessoa died in 1985 in Lisbon.</text>

<text>Pedro Anselmo Braamcamp Freire Cid was born on January 19, 1925, in Lisbon. He was a Portuguese architect belonging to the generation of post-war modernist architects. He graduated from architecture in 1952 at the Escola de Belas Artes, in Lisbo. In 1948 he participated, still as an architecture student, in the 1st National Congress of Architecture, promoted by the Sindicato Nacional dos Arquitetos. He accumulated several important positions during his professional life. He worked at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where he collaborated in the launch of the GAT (Gabinetes de Apoio Técnico). In 1978 he assumed the direction of the Montemor-o-Novo GAT, a position that would mark his reunion with the Alentejo territory and the popular architecture. Throughout his activity, he tried to honour the clear, clean and discreet architecture with great sense of economy of materials.

He was part of the renovation of the city of Lisbon in the 1950s, with important works. These include the Avenida Estados Unidos da América Housing Blocks, designed with João Vasconcelos Esteves and Manuel Laginha between 1955 and 1957, one of the first examples of the application of CIAM's theories to the urban layout of Lisbon, the Portugal Pavilion in the Brussels Universal Exhibition, between 1956 and 1958, the first major post-war architecture event, where the construction body, a sober volume of a continuous passage, was implanted in order to integrate the surroundings, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Museum and Headquarters Building, designed with Ruy Jervis Athouguia and Alberto Pessoa between 1959 and 1969, a housing development in Olaias, designed with Fernando Torres in 1963, and the Jean Monet Building in Lisbon, in 1974. Outside Lisbon, he also made some interventions, as is the case of the Cacela Sub-Regional Plan, in Vila Real de Santo António, in 1966.

He was awarded several times. On October 31, 1969, he was made officer of the Military Order of SantiIago da Espada. In 1956 he won the Municipal Prize for his work on Avenida Estados Unidos da América, alongside with Manuel Lajinha and João Vasconcelos Esteves. He won the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Architecture Prize in 1975 for the architectural ensemble consisting of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Headquarters, Gardens and Museum, with Ruy Jervis Athouguia, Alberto Pessoa, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Viana Barreto. Pedro Cid died in Lisbon in 1983, at the age of 58 years old.</text>

He was the son of Manuel Jervis d’Athouguia Ferreira Pinto Basto and his wife Emilia de Sequeira Manso Gomes Palma. He married Maria Domingas Cirilo de Carvalho Pepulim, with whom he had six children. He attended the Colégio Militar between 1927 and 1936, finishing his studies at the age of 19. He then went to the Escola de Belas Artes in Lisbon. In 1940 he requested a transfer to the Escola de Belas Artes in Porto, where he graduated architecture in 1944. In the northern city he was a student of Carlos Ramos and met with names such as João Anderson and his sister, the poetess Sophia de Mello Breyner e Anderson. He worked at Veloso de Reis Camelo's office and later with Filipe Nobre de Figueiredo and Jorge Segurado, where he resumed an important friendship, complicity and working relationship with Sebastião Formosinho Sanchez. Subsequently, he worked as a liberal professional but was also a collaborator at the Cascais Town Hall for 4 years, where he did important works such as the “Bairro dos Pobres” under the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Cascais. He was also an urban consultant at Montijo City Hall and Beja City Hall.

His work in Lisbon includes the "Bairro das Estacas", designed in partnership with Formosinho Sanchez and Maurício de Vasconcelos between 1949 and 1955, the first urban set in Lisbon with the principles of the Charter of Athens, the Primary Schools of the São Miguel neighborhood between 1949 and 1953, adapting the brise-soleil to the window in fulfillment, the Teixeira de Pascoaes School between 1956 and 1961, structured in a pavilion system according to volumes of great purity and poetic abstraction, the Padre António Vieira Secondary School between 1959 and 1964, the housing estate of Alvalade Square, the São Pedro de Abrantes Cineteatro of 1949, and the Infante Tower. His most important work is the headquarters and museum building of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, which he designed in partnership with architects Pedro Cid and Alberto Pessoa between 1959 and 1969. This project was the culmination of a modern speech, revealed in the rationalist principles of the organization of dry and abstract volumes.

Together with Alberto Pessoa, Pedro Cid, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles and António Viana Barreto, he won the 1975 Valmor Award for the architectural ensemble of the Calouste Gulbenkian Headquarters, Gardens and Museum. He had already won a prize at the 1960 São Paulo biennial for Alvalade's “Bairro das Estacas”. He used, during his lifetime, the title of 4th Viscount of Atouguia, attributed by the then Council of Nobility. On October 31, 1969, he was made Officer of the Military Order of Santiago da Espada. In December 2003, the Ordem dos Arquitetos organized at the Galveias Palace in Lisbon a retrospective exhibition of his work, integrated in the theme Architects of the Modern Generation. <text>Tomás Taveira was born in Lisbon on November 22, 1938. He comes from a humble family, workers from the Picheleira area of Lisbon. He started as a locksmith, but the beginning of his career as an architect happened only when he started working in the studios of Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Francisco da Conceição Silva, for whom he had a great admiration. He also worked as a designer for architects such as Francisco Keil do Amaral. In the 60's he attended architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes, in Lisbon. After graduation, he traveled to Boston, USA, where he completed a postgraduate degree in Regional and Urban Planning as part of her PhD programs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He created his own studio soon after graduating, in 1971. He divided his professional activity between urbanism, architecture and design, being a symbol on the postmodernism of Portuguese architecture, with mirrored buildings, bold and colourful geometric elements. Some of his most emblematic works are the socially-oriented urban complex in the former Zona J of Chelas, the Amoreiras commercial and residential complex, the Encosta das Olaias residential area, the headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, currently the Caixa Geral de Deposits, IADE Building (Faculdade de Design, Tecnologia e Comunicação), Palmela Village, Alvalade XXI Stadium, Aveiro Municipal Stadium, Leiria Municipal Stadium, Olaias Metro Station, Record Store and Factory Valentim de Carvalho, the Hotel da Balaia and the Castilho Building.

He was a professor at various institutions. In 1973, he began teaching at the Faculdade de Arquitectura of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, where he taught until September 2003, already a guest professor. He also taught at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and California State Politecnic University. He has also received several awards. In 1984 he received the Valmor Prize and the Municipal City of Lisbon Prize for the Olaias housing complex, the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Architecture Prize in 1993 for the Amoreiras Complex and the Valmor Prize Honorable Mention in 1994 for the headquarters of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino. He also wrote some important articles in several newspapers and magazines, such as "Domus", "Progressive Architecture", "A + U" and "Arquitectura Portuguesa", and also published some books, including the Estudo de Renovação Urbana na Área do Martim Moniz, which won the José de Figueiredo award of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1982. He was a member of the International Association of Art Critics (IAAC) and has left work not only all over Portugal, but also in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Macau, Angola and Cape Verde.</text>
