<text>
José Sidónio Brazão Farinha was born in Calheta, Madeira Island, on April 12, 1919. He married Maria Gertrudes Ribeiro de Castro Brazão Farinha, mother of his sons Manuel Brazão Farinha and José Pedro Brazão Farinha. He was a figure linked to the Lisbon Metropolitan, dedicated to studies on the Lisbon subsoil and author of a vast work that constitutes a valuable historical, cultural and technical reference for the implementation of the metro in the Portuguese capital. He graduated in 1944 from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in civil engineering.

His professional life began linked to the Direção Geral dos Serviços Hidráulicos, where he worked between 1944 and 1949 doing research work on water treatment and sanitation. He collaborated at the Profabril Study Center, namely for the installation of the Tabaqueira in Albarraque and of Petroquímica in Lisbon. However, it is to the Lisbon Metropolitan that Brazão Farinha is associated. He worked there for 41 years. He mainly worked to its start-up and the installation of the first 19.5 km of lines. Between 1950 and 1959 he was part of the construction of the Cristo Rei Statue, inaugurated in 1959 in Almada. In the technical team, he worked as a structural engineer.

He was a professor at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), where he collaborated in the foundation of the Center for Civil Engineering Studies. He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the “Amigos de Lisboa” Group and, as such, he briefly joined the Municipal Commission of Toponymy in 1997. He wrote several works, some of which are still guides for the study of engineering, such as Tabelas técnicas, which he coordinated with Correia dos Reis. This book stood for posterity as the gutter of calculating concrete structures. He also wrote some articles, such as the "Ábaco para doseamento de betões" published in Técnica. José Sidónio Brazão Farinha passed away in 2002.
</text>

              <text>
Francisco de Assis de Mendonça Lino Netto was born in Coração de Jesus, in Lisbon, on January 14, 1918. He was a famous engineer known for his interventions in the construction of the Lisbon subway and one of the protagonists of Catholic militantism who, from the 1950s, was positioned in confrontation with the Estado Novo regime. He was from a traditional Catholic family, and his father, the lawyer António Lino Netto, had a notorious life had he not been a full professor of Political Economy and Administrative Law, president of the Portuguese Catholic Center (CCP) from 1919 to 1934, centrist deputy in 1918 and from 1922 to 1926, interim president of the House of Representatives in 1918, director of the newspaper "A União" from 1920 to 1934, among many other relevant positions. In turn, his son followed another professional direction, graduating in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico.

He was an assistant professor at Instituto Superior Técnico between 1942 and 1945 and between 1947 and 1952. He distinguished himself professionally in the Lisbon Metropolitan since the company was founded in 1949. He was also the engineer responsible for the electrical installations of various construction works, namely of the statue of Cristo Rei, inaugurated in 1959, in Almada.

He was a militant of the Catholic University Youth (JUC), however it is from 1958 that Francisco Lino Netto assumes a position of intervention in the context of elections for the Presidency of the Republic. He actively supports General Humberto Delgado's presidential campaign and was injured in a demonstration in Lisbon, repressed by the police. This is the first initiative of Francisco Lino Neto in the fight against the regime in force, adding several personalities of the catholic environment, such as Carlos Portas, João Gomes, António Alçada Baptista, Manuel Serra and Nuno de Bragança. Lino Neto came to lead the so-called “Catholic opposition”, namely as editor and subscriber of public documents, initiatives that would lead him to be watched by PIDE, the government police, and arrested in October of 1958. He was a candidate in the 1961 elections and in 1965 he integrated the Christian Democratic Action Movement, being one of the subscribers to the document of Catholic oppositionists that became known by the " Carta dos 101". In 1969, he was an independent candidate on the list of the Democratic Electoral Commission of Santarém for the National Assembly elections. That same year was one of the founders of the National Commission of Relief to the Political Prisoners. In 1973 he joined the national commission of the III Congress of the Democratic Opposition, held in Aveiro. After the April 25th Revolution, he was deputy of the Lisbon circle by the Socialist Party, in the 1st Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic.

He was the author of several articles and pamphlets of opposition to the Estado Novo regime, namely the 1958 “Considerations of a Catholic on the Electoral Period”, the 1959 “Relations between Church and State and the Freedom of Catholics”, sending that same year a letter to António de Oliveira Salazar, and the 1969 “The Overseas Question: Suggestions for a Solution Perspective”. In the professional field he also wrote several articles, namely the 1976 "O Consumo de Energia de Tracção no Metropolitano de Lisboa". Francisco Lino Netto died in Lisbon on June 25, 1997.
</text>

              <text>Ernest Joseph Xavier Fleury was born in Vermes, Switzerland, on October 26, 1878. He was a leading geologist and professor of geology, an expert in sedimentary geology. He studied geology, geography and chemistry first at the University of Basel and, from 1902, at the University of Freiburg. From 1905 to 1907, he had his PhD Magna cum laud in Natural Philosophy at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Freiburg. While preparing his PhD, he accepted to be the tutor of an American student, which allowed him to travel for three years in Europe, having the opportunity, in 1906, to study Zoology and Anthropology at the School of Anthropology in Paris.

Between 1908 and 1913, he was a professor at the École des Roches in Verneuil-sur-Avre, France. However, it was in 1913 that the teaching career would take Fleury to Portugal. At the invitation of his compatriot Leon Paul de Choffat, he began teaching that year the chairs of Geology and Paleontology at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), for the course of Mines. Here, he was also responsible for the Directorate of the Geology Laboratory and for the organization of the Portuguese Geology and Paleontology collections needed for teaching. Fleury was a professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico until his rejoicing in 1948. Fleury's classes were mostly practical in nature, promoting numerous field trips, a practice indispensable for learning geology, but not common in teaching the discipline at the time.

Fleury devoted himself to the main problems of Portuguese geology, especially the study of secondary and tertiary lands. Other areas of geology that deserved his attention concern morphology and karst hydrogeology. Over the years, Fleury devoted himself, not without any reluctance, to more practical work, namely to research water and coals. Thus, the last years of his professional life were essentially filled with this type of work, being called by the official authorities to give his technical support in the construction of dams, such as Castelo de Bode, Cabril or Bouçã, regulating the waters of the Liz River and its tributaries, supplying water to Lisbon and planning and building the metropolitan of the Portuguese capital. Fleury was the geologist assigned to accompany the Portuguese Institute of Fuels in Cape Mondego coal research and bituminous research. During the 1950s he was also a foundation engineer for the Cristo Rei statue, inaugurated in 1959 in Almada.

All these circumstances made Fleury's activity as an investigator resent. Its scientific publications began to be scarce from 1926, predominating the studies in applied geology. However, between 1903 and 1944, he authored 86 publications on geological issues in Switzerland, Portugal and extending also to the former Portuguese colonies. In the 1920s, he was even a corresponding member in Lisbon of the Geological Mission to Angola, which later gave rise to the Angola Geological Map Service. Later, in 1941 and 1942, he was also a consultant to the Geology and Mines Service of that same old Portuguese province. In addition to being a member of several foreign scientific organizations, such as the Société Géologique de Suisse and the Société Géologique de France, Fleury was a partner of the Lisbon Geography Society, the Portuguese Society of Natural Sciences and a foreign correspondent partner of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. In 1939 he was appointed member of the Lisbon Water Treatment Commission. He was also a member of the Superior Council of Mines, member of the Portuguese Institute of Fuels and geologist of Geological Services between 1929 and 1934, and in 1949 returned as a collaborator of this institution. Ernest Fleury died in Lisbon on 8 October 1958. He was 80 years old and had just reach 45 years of residence in Portugal.</text>

              <text>Francisco Xavier Lobo de Almeida de Mello e Castro was born on September 15, 1919, in Sintra. He was the son of Pedro Maria Rafael Lobo de Almeida de Mello e Castro and Laura Davidson de Guimarães Serôdio. He married Maria Cecília Pinto da Fonseca de Sousa Rego, with whom he had six children, including Pedro Maria Rego de Mello and Castro. He was a remarkable Portuguese civil engineer, present in various fields of the construction sector in Portugal during the twentieth century. He graduated in civil engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon.

One of the construction works that most marked his career as an engineer was the Cristo Rei statue, which is over 100 meters high and still is one of the tallest structures in the country. He signed the project with the architect António Lino da Silva and the construction work, which began in 1950, was inaugurated in 1959. Francisco Mello e Castro made the project of the Cristo Rei monument free of charge, as well as the accompaniment of the work for about 10 years, simply for devotion to the project.

He was president of the Board of Directors of the Lisbon Metro from September 1954 to August 1972. He is considered the father of the Metro. As president, on July 11, 1955, the base contracts were signed for the installation of the 1st tier of the subway network, commencing the construction work. On December 29, 1959, at the Restauradores station, he presided over the official inauguration of the first stage of the subway network’s first phase, comprising 11 stations and forming a “Y” line with the two branches, Entre Campos to Rotunda and Sete Rios to the Rotunda, then forming a common section of the Rotunda to the Restauradores. The exploration was carried out with trains of two carriages, both motorized. In 1963, the section of the Restauradores to Rossio went into operation. The studies carried out during his presidency were based on the Lisbon Urbanization Master Plan and the Urban and Suburban Transport Coordination Plan.

He accumulated more important positions in Portugal. In the professional field, like his position in the Lisbon Metro, he was managing director of the Portuguese Railways Company, was chairman of the General Council of Portuguese Air Transport and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the General Administration of the Porto de Lisboa. At the political level, he was director of the Technical Office of Civil Aerodromes and was a member of the Porto da Beira Study Commission. Attached to the government, he was a proxy for the Corporate Chamber by appointment of Salazar. In the 5th Legislature, he represented the railway companies. In the 6th Legislature he represented the air transport companies. Finally, in the 8th and 9th Legislatures he was designated by the Corporate Council. During these legislatures he devoted much of his time to the 1968-1973 Development Plan, a project that he was responsible for all through the 1960s. Francisco Mello e Castro died on October 29, 1978, in Lisbon, at the age of 67.</text>
