It was founded in 1941 by Artur Alves Ribeiro, its founder. However, the company had already a background in the area. Artur Alves Ribeiro was working individually since 1931. With an initial capital of 500 escudos, the company embarked on public works, in particular roads and airfields, despite the economic recession that affected Europe after World War II. The first works, which still refer to when Artur Alves Ribeiro worked in a personal capacity, lasted until 1941, when the company had already been founded. These were earthworks, sewers, pavements and the construction of a viaduct over the existing railway line of Avenida Gago Coutinho and Avenida Almirante Reis, in Lisbon, commissioned by the Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and the Junta Autónoma das Estradas. Orders were quickly directed to other types of construction, namely airports – the Lisbon Airport in 1942, the Montijo Airport in 1948 and the Sal Airport in 1949 – or even student complexes, which accompanied the company's growth over these two centuries – the Maristas College of Carcavelos in 1963, the Catholic University of Lisbon in 1968, the College of St. John of Brito in 1999, the College of St. Thomas in 2006, the College Valsassina in 2007 and the new campus of Nova School of Business & Economics in 2017. Throughout the century Alves Ribeiro was present in several public works and buildings of great importance for to country and which are still symbols of the history of construction in Portugal, such as Avenida de Ceuta, the renovation of Parque Eduardo VII, the headquarters of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the two stadiums of Sporting Clube de Portugal, the Amoreiras shopping complex and, more recently, the MAAT building. In the 1950s, two sons of the founder, Vítor Silva Ribeiro and José Alves Ribeiro, joined the company and continued its management, having been linked to several works from the 70's. In 1983, the company Mundicenter was created, with the goal of developing the business area of the shopping centers and its consecutive exploration, including, for exemple, Amoreiras Shopping and Oeiras Park. Still in the 1980s, in 1987, the company Alrisa was created, responsible for the promotion and management of real estate under lease and sale. This company owns, for example, the Amoreiras towers and other buildings on Avenida da República, Praça de Alvalade or Estrada de Benfica. In the 90's, Banco Invest was created, dedicated to the areas of Corporate finance, Private Banking, Brokerage and Credit. Finally, in the new century, the Alves Ribeiro Group, which started to compose all these companies, was internationalized. In 2006 a construction company is established in Angola. In 2012, the company got its first project in Brazil, winning an infrastructure in Florianópolis. The founder and president was Engineer Henrique Burnay Leitão, although it started with three other shareholders, the brothers D. Rodrigo de Castro Pereira (1887-1983) and Nuno José van Zeller de Castro Pereira (1907-1986) and António Casanovas Augustine. Initially created with limited liability, in 1971 the company became a public limited company. Since its beginnings, its aim was the elaboration of the project and the consequent construction of major works in the country's infrastructure collection, especially when talking about the “Estado Novo” and the Public Works policy inherent to the regime. This pattern would also be seen in democracy, from 1974. The internationalization of the company occurred, like so many others, due to the need to build the overseas territory, acting mainly in Angola, Cape Verde and Mozambique, where the company had delegations. Large companies as this one are always associated with great technicians. Several men helped build the legacy of Construções Técnicas, including engineer José Brigham da Silva, who opened and managed the company's Cape Verde Delegation, engineer José Ricciardi and his brother, who started and directed the execution of the Silos in Porto do Lobito in 1952, engineer Rui de Sousa, who managed the Delegation of Mozambique between the end of the sixties and the beginning of the seventies, Henrique Francisco Martins, who managed the Delegation of Angola when the execution of the Cabinda Pier started, engineers Virgílio Lopes Cabrita and Oliveira Neves, who introduced modern design, planning, budgeting, execution and control techniques to the company, and engineer Manuel Rocha, who later became chair at the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) and served as president of the Order of Engineers. On the other hand, with regard to the company's portfolio, there are several works of renown that can be associated with Construções Técnicas, namely the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon, the reconstruction of the National Theater D. Maria II also in Lisbon, the Marina of Vilamoura in Algarve, the Alto da Boa Viagem Node, the Ports of Leixões in Matosinhos, Luanda and Lobito in Angola, Beira and Lourenço Marques in Mozambique and Porto Grande, Porto Novo and the Porto do Vale dos Cavaleiros in Cape Verde, the Sacavém viaduct, the number six hangar at the Lisbon Airport, the Luanda Water Treatment Station, one of the company's first works, and the Raiva and Aguieira dams in Penacova and Corte Bique dam in Odemira. Construções Técnicas established links with the world's major construction companies, securing a Swedish patent for the sliding of silos and chimneys, which led to the forefront in the technique of sliding in the country, applying it to the numerous bulk silos, cement factories, chimneys, both in Portugal and in the Colonies. With the April 1974 revolution, the company drastically changed its course. With the alienation of the company's management and with state intervention, without being nationalized, Construções Técnicas took time to recover the volume of business they had previously had. The company ended up not surviving the turn of the millennium, having filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Being a majority partner, and having as representative Manuel Godinho, one of the founders of OPCA, the company from Porto followed the growth of its affiliate, including working on joint works. Headquartered in Lisbon, NOVOPCA gradually moved away from its home company. Its activity began in Lisbon with the Alvalade neighborhood, followed by the works of the 1st section of the Lisbon Metro, from Sete Rios to Rossio and Entre Campos to Avenida. The engineering background of its founding partners also led to specialization in the bridge and viaduct sector, such as the Santa Clara Bridge in Coimbra, the Geres Bridges over the Cávado and Caldo rivers, the Rainha Santa Isabel Bridge in Coimbra, the Sousa River Bridge, the Frade and Agudim Viaducts on A1, and the Tâmega River Bridge on A4, and in the industrial sector, including the General Motors Portugal Facilities and the Factory and Grinding Silos of Alhandra. However, the company built many other undeniable symbols of architecture, such as the Navy Museum and the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium, both in Lisbon. The consequences of the crisis in the sector, which began in the mid-1970s, lead to a radical change in the Company's activity, which started to focus also on construction and social housing, as exemplified by the developments of São Pedro da Cova and Carcavelos, both in Porto, and Ingote, in Coimbra. The company expanded its operations, making room for the real estate market through the creation of NOVOPCA Imobiliária. As part of Expo 98, the company built pavilions of participating countries and reordered the José Queiroz Square, and, as part of Euro 2004, the company participated in the construction of Alvalade XXI Stadium, being responsible for the roof masts and finishing’s. With the recent financial crisis, the company has profoundly restructured its organizational model and diversified its activity to the international market, especially in Angola, Brazil and Mozambique. The company is still active to this day. In this first year the company assumed the designation of Moniz da Maia, Duarte & Vaz Guedes, Lda. However, this same name would mutate several times during the second half of the twentieth century, mainly due to splits within the company. The company emerged in response to the anticipated post-war recovery, coupled with strong public investment in major infrastructures, including dams, ports, viaducts, bridges and roads. In the same year of its founding, José Vaz Guedes's company signed its first work, the Castelo de Bode Dam, one of the most important in the Zêzere river and one of the largest in the country. The company's range of work increased, passing by the construction of bridges, for example the Vale da Ursa Bridge, on the Zêzere river, or even the construction of ports, such as the Funchal Port. Its first international project, the Açude Bridge over the Limpopo River, in Mozambique, was also a big milestone for the company’s first years. Its quick growth resulted in the expansion to other specialties or businesses through the participation or integration of Portuguese and international companies. Examples of this initiative are the creation of Mague in 1952, the creation, in 1986, of Ediçor for the Azores market, a 45% stake in CVC (Construções de Cabo Verde) in 1990, the acquisition of 50% of Habitar in Angola and 80% of the company Sogel in Mozambique in 1999 and, finally, the control in 2002 of the company specializing in the railway market, Neopul. Gradually the company grew and became a specialist in various areas, intervening in various locations. From 1952, the company undergoes several structural changes, changing its name to Moniz da Maia & Vaz Guedes, Lda. and transforming it in a limited liability company, in 1965. In 1969, the Vaz Guedes family acquired the entire capital of the company, renaming it Sociedade de Empreitadas Somague. Finally, in 1998, the merger of Somague with Soconstroi gave way to Somague Engenharia SA, one of the largest Portuguese construction and public works company. In the year 2000, Somague joined the Sacyr Vallehermoso Group, a business group that was bringing together several leading companies in different segments. Finally, in 2004, Somague was fully integrated into the group resulting in a larger and stronger business group with excellent business potential and the ability to compete on a different scale, a scale not only restricted to the domestic market or the former Portuguese “ultramar”, namely Angola and Mozambique. In the year of its founding by the Fonseca and Mota families, dedicating the company to the construction and public works, Mota & Companhia was founded by Manuel António da Mota, focused on woodworking. Although they had matching partners, the two companies went their separate ways. Unlike Mota & Companhia, Construtora do Tâmega would concentrate its attention on the mainland of Portugal. Its first work would be precisely in the infrastructure sector, with the adjudication of the fourth section of EN8 between Valado and Alcobaça. However, many other works are a reference of the company, such as the Funchal airport, the Beira and Maputo airport or even, at the end of the millennium, the Portuguese pavilion for EXPO'98. In the 1950s and 1960s the company began its internationalization, expanding its activity first to the colonies, namely Mozambique and Angola, and later to other areas of the globe, such as Spain, Jordan and Côte d'Ivoire. During this period, specifically in 1977, Manuel António da Mota separated from the company to dedicate himself entirely to Mota & Companhia, leaving the fate of the company to the Fonseca family and his brothers, José Luís and Joaquim Mota. The extension of its activity is also evident in the intervention areas, starting in the 1970s works on the hydroelectric branch, of which the Crestuma Dam, in the council of Vila Nova de Gaia, is a reference. Its diversification was also extended to the area of transport, housing, commerce, sport, industry and tourism, and many of its works were distinguished by the Engineers Association. In 2007, Construtora do Tâmega was acquired by the Finertec Group and currently operates in Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Congo-Brazzaville and more recently in Nigeria. Mota & Companhia worked in the area of exploration and transformation of wood and, from 1948, cumulatively, in the area of Construction and Public works. Headquartered in Cabinda, Angola, its first major reference in construction was the Luanda International Airport, current 4 de fevereiro Airport, planned in 1952. During the 1970s, the company internationalized to countries other than Angola, such as Namibia, Botswana or Swaziland. However, in the following decades the company was able to spread to other territories. In Africa, it expanded to Gabon, Mozambique, Malawi and Cape Verde, where it left its mark on the construction of Praia airport. In Europe, it arrived in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. In the 90's the company would also arrive to Latin America, in a partnership that enhanced the future merger with Engil. With a vast activity in Africa and with a deep connection especially with Angola, in 1976 Mota & Companhia relaunched its activity in Portugal. Despite having built the Lucefecit Dam in Alandroal in 1976, it was with the Baixo Mondego hydraulic works in 1978 that the company affirmed itself in the national territory, with an investment around 39 million euros. Continuing its activity in Portugal, the company made part of the consortium of the EXPO 98's Vasco da Gama bridge, over the Tagus River. On July 23, 1999, the companies owned by Mota family launched a takeover bid for the entire capital of Engil SGPS, which resulted in the birth of the Mota-Engil Group as we know it today. This operation had a major impact on the construction sector, becoming the largest construction company operating in Portugal, leading also in the area of services (through Mota-Engil Ambiente e Serviços) and a in the transport concessions sector. Although the beginning of the company’s history dates back to 1926, with the construction of several works, such as the Chapel of the La Salette Sanctuary, in Oliveira de Azeméis, it was only in 1931 that its founders opened an office in Porto and only in March of 1932 that the company was officialy founded. In the 1930s, its activity was mainly in the construction of buildings, industrial facilities, factories, bridges and roads and at the end of the decade its activity was extended to the whole national territory, being an example of one of its works at the time the Urbanization of the Forest Park of Monsanto. During the 1940s, OPCA was present in the main Portuguese engineering works, with emphasis on the participation of the Lisbon underground, which became one of the emblematic areas of intervention starred by the company. In the 1950s and 1960s, OPCA continued to increase its experience as a global engineering company, reinforcing its involvement in industrial and hydraulic works and, in the 1970s, also in housing buildings and hospitals. From the 1980s onwards, the company began an upward trajectory, with a focus on diversifying the activity. OPCA consolidated the area of construction, betting on the specialized infrastructures and technical constructions and guaranteeing its presence, still in the construction sector, on geotechnical and engineering foundations. The company also entered on new business areas, through participation in real estate, environment (industrial waste management) and telecommunications (infrastructures). It was also in the 1980s that the process of internationalization of the company began, through its presence in Macao, Angola and Mozambique. OPCA was one of the most prestigious Portuguese companies to work in the engineering, civil construction and public works sector between 1932 and 2008. In 2008 the company joined SOPOL to form Opway. It began by having only 10 workers, dedicating themselves mainly to the execution of high-quality finishings and fine gold paintings, a technique that José Soares da Costa learned in France. The first commercial registration is from 1925, at the Oporto Commercial Registry Office, under the individual name of the founder. The name of the company changed several times. In 1938 the name changed to "Viúva de José Soares da Costa", in 1944 to "Soares da Costa Lda.", in 1968 to "Sociedade de Construções Soares da Costa, SARL" and in 1988 to "Sociedade de Construções Soares da Costa, SA". At the end of the 20th century, Soares da Costa was already dedicating itself also to the construction sector, concessions and real estate.  It was in the construction, especially with the technology of "cofragem túnel", that the company found the door leading to a continuous growth. In the 1960s Soares da Costa expanded its activity to the whole Portuguese territory and in the early 1980s it began its international expansion, starting with Venezuela and Guinea-Bissau. It is also in the same decade that, by taking advantage of the growth of infrastructures in the country that the European Community announced, the company's activity is extended to the construction of infrastructures. Now the company was widening its spectrum of buildings, including roads, bridges, overpasses, railways, WWTPs, hospitals, schools, office buildings and residential buildings. In 1988, following a change in the internal shareholding, the company went throught a period of greater exposure to the financial market, even so it didn't lose its family character. During the 1980s and 1990s, the Company's international activity diversified and exports grew, being present in Iraq, Macao, Egypt, Guyana, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Germany. The Company entered the US market in 1994 with the formation of SDC Contractor Inc. In 2002 a new restructuring took place which led to the creation of the economic group "Soares da Costa, SGPS, SA", replacing "Sociedade de Construções Soares da Costa, SA", which in turn fully owns the four other holding companies, each heading the holdings of the respective business segment.
