<text>Tudor Engineering Company was founded in 1950 by Ralph A. Tudor. The reputation of the company's founder grew through his involvement in the Bay Bridge, among other bridges in the San Francisco area. Therefore, the company's first works were dedicated to the bridge sector, specifically on the Colombia River, between the states of Oregon and Washington. Still in the 1950s, the company expanded its areas of intervention, first for the construction of highways and, later, for the construction of hydroelectric infrastructures, one of the first being the Sierra Nevada hydroelectric project in California. Also in this state, the company developed important projects, namely for the Merced Irrigation District and the Exchequer Dam, at the time the highest concrete-faced rock-filled dam in the United States. In the 1960s, Tudor Engineering went international, having played a central role in the construction of the 25 de Abril Bridge, in Lisbon. During this decade and the following, international works increased. In the 1970s, they carried out the system for the Caracas metro in Venezuela. In the company's home land they continued to develop big projects, such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Area Rapid Transit. After San Francisco, the company moved to Los Angeles only to move again in 1989 to Oakland, in the same state. This change resulted from a merger of the company with Kaiser Engineering, which was based in that city.</text>

<text>COBA was founded in Portugal in 1962. It’s a multidisciplinary Engineering and Environment Consulting company that dates back to a group of internationally renowned specialists in vault dams. The leader of taht group was precisely Joaquim Laginha Serafim. Still in the 60s, the company started contracts outside Portugal, particularly in Costa Rica, Greece. COBA founded companies in Spain and Brazil and collaborated on projects in Angola and Mozambique. In July 1969 the company became a public limited company, following its first major work in the area of water supply, precisely with the reinforcement of the Water Supply System in the Lisbon Region.

The seventies were marked by the expansion of the company's areas of intervention, having carried out the first works in the area of Roads and Agriculture, and the geography of that same intervention, having entered the Algerian market. During this decade, COBA was also established, with its own facilities, in Lisbon, inaugurating the COBA building, where the company's headquarters were integrated. With the arrival of the eighties, COBA's intervention extended to the rail and environmental sector, and, in the nineties, this same intervention would reach Morocco and other African and Latin American countries. The projects for the company intensified in these two decades since COBA was benefited greatly from the growth of design-construction contracts and exploration under concession. With this conjecture, the company also started to carry out mapping and registration work. In 1998, the company built what is one of COBA's milestones, the Vasco da Gama Bridge, consolidating a position as a leader in the national engineering services market.

In the new millennium, the company's activity reached countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, Senegal, Equatorial Guinea and Ghana. With the expansion of COBA's activity and geography, the company created the “COBA Holding”, assuming the format that is still visible today, with companies at a regional level and participating companies. In the decade of 2010, COBA entered the market of energy production. The company was and continues to be one of the main promoters of Portuguese consulting organizations, incentivising the promotion of the national technique abroad. Nowadays, COBA has activities being developed in Portugal and in 35 foreign countries, with more than one hundred and fifty employees. The company built and consulted major engineering works, namely the Cachi Dam in Costa Rica in 1969, the Keddara Dam in Algeria in 1986 and the Lezíria Bridge in Portugal in 2007. It’s registered within international financing organizations, namely the European Union, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the UN (United Nations).</text>

<text>Strabag is the result of the merger of two companies, one German and one Austrian, in 1998. The first, called Baumeister Lerchbaumer-Isola-KG, was founded in 1929 by Anton Lerchbaumer and his son-in-law Franz Isola. With the death of Anton Lerchbaumer Sen-ior, Franz Isola became the sole partner of one of the largest Austrian construction com-panies. Consequently in 1968, when Franz Isola passed away, Anton Lerchbaumer Jun-ior was becoming in charge of the company. The company became known as "ILBAU AG" from 1972. The second company, called "Strassenwalzenbetrieb" was founded in 1895, however, from 1930 onwards it became known as "Strabag". It was not until 1998 that the two companies would merge under the name "BIBAG Bauindustrie Beteiligungs Aktiengesellschaft", which would later change it to "Strabag SE". The company joined the Vienna Stock Exchange in that same year. Operating in different specialties, the compa-ny is divided in construction and civil engineering, infrastructure and transport, and, final-ly, Concessions. The company's main projects include the North Sea Alte Weser Light-house, completed in 1964, Iraq's Basra International Airport, completed in 1988, the Co-penhagen Metro in Denmark, completed in 2002, the Manapouri Tunnel, in New Zea-land, completed in 2002, and the Second Terminal of Sofia Airport, Bulgaria, completed in 2006.</text>

<text>Soconstroi, Sociedade de Construções, S.A. was founded in 1983 by Engineer Godinho Lopes, that at the time was 30 years old, and Américo Santos. With seven partners, the company began its journey in a troubled period, as Portugal was in crisis and on the brink of an intervention by the IMF (International Monetary Fund). Godinho Lopes remained for fourteen years in charge of the company. Other names belong to the history and growth of this company, namely engineer Carlos Vidal, who joined in 1985, and together with Godinho Lopes bought the shares of the remaining partners, and Rui Pinto Baptista, a former colleague of the Godi-nho Lopes at the Instituto Superior Técnico that joined the company in 1988. Socons-troi's first works were mainly for the public sector, with entities such as CTT (Correios, Telégrafos e Telefones de Portugal), former TLP (Telefones de Lisboa e Porto), EDP (Energias de Portugal), and ANA (Aeroportos e Navegação Aérea de Portugal). Most of these works were the result of the great investment in the country, following Portugal's accession to the EEC. The first works were in the Lisbon Metro, followed by the Au-toeuropa factory in Palmela. In 1989 the French company Bouygues, also specialized in construction, became a partner of Soconstroi, having opened doors for a new list of works with CP (Comboios de Portugal). In 1993, upon leaving Bouygues, the company merged with A. Silva & Silva, renaming the company Assiconstroi. Finally, in 1997, the company was bought by Somague.</text>

<text>Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick was founded in 1951 by Sir Cyril Kirkpatrick, born in 1872 and deceased in 1957, William Scott and Dr. Guthlac Wilson. Kirkpatrick was Chief Engineer of the Port of London Authority from 1913 to 1924. Shortly thereafter, he decided to set up his own company, in 1924, specializing in docks, ports and sea defences. During World War II Kirkpatrick was responsible for elucidating about the caissons concrete construction, an innovation that would lead to the creation of the Mulberry Harbors, temporary and portable ports that facilitated the landing in Normandy. In turn, in 1945, the engineers William Scott and Dr. Guthlac Wilson founded a partnership. Among their works, they were responsible for the design of the Chiswick and Twickenham bridges over the River Thames in 1933, the Royal Festival Hall in London, among many other. In 1951 the two companies merged to form Scott & Wilson, Kirkpatrick & Partners. In the late 1960s, this company was responsible for the engineering work on the M6 motorway. Scott & Wilson, Kirkpatrick & Partners grew through acquisitions over the following decades. In August 1995, the company acquired two engineering design offices of “British Rail” in Glasgow and Swindon during the privatization of the state company. Other acquisitions took place in the areas of environmental consulting, health and education properties, energy and mining and landscape design. In 1997, the company adopted the name Scott Wilson and on March 15, 2006 entered the London Stock Exchange. The company acquired the civil engineering expert “Benaim Enterprise” in 2008 for £ 5.5 million. On September 10, 2010, US engineering design firm “URS Corporation” completed the acquisition of Scott Wilson Group. At the time of the purchase, the British group had 5500 employees in 80 offices, mainly located in the United Kingdom, Europe, India, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. The group's main regional offices were in London, Hong Kong, Warsaw, New Delhi, Bahrain and Dubai. Its portfolio includes the stabilization of Combe Down Mine in Somerset, Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, Eden Project in Cornwall, Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, Erbil International Airport in Erbil, the expansion of Colombo Port in Sri Lanka, Brunei International Airport in Brunei, Lai Chi Kok Bridge and Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong, and Macau International Airport in China.</text>

<text>Mague was founded in 1952 as an official branch of the "Moniz da Maia and Vaz Guedes, Lda." company. It dedicated itself to the production of handling equipment, such as cranes and bridges, and to energy production equipment. It became an independent company in 1958. It started with a share capital of six hundred thousand contos, with the participation of foreign companies, namely twenty four thousand contos of “A. B. Bofors Nohab” and one hundred twenty-two thousand three hundred and thirty-eight contos from “Société Anonyme Brown Boveri & Cie”. The company's board of directors was initially chaired by engineer Bernardo Ernesto Moniz da Maia. As executives of the company were the engineers Guedes da Silva, João de Queiroz Vaz Guedes, Silva Pinto, Joãoo Manuel Saturnino Moniz da Maia and Nunes de Almeida.

Headquartered in Alverca, the company began to have about two thousand and five hundred people, of which two thousand and two hundred workdd at the headquarters. The remaining three hundred worked in Setúbal. The Alverca factory had several pavilions. One refurbished with all means of preparing, machining, welding and moving pipes to produce tubular panels for steam generators. Another was reserved for the production of steam generator coils, having specific means for treating and bending pipes and for assembly, welding and control of pipe assemblies. Finally, the last one was prepared and equipped for factory assembly of steam turbines. A second factory, in Setúbal, contained a heavy boiler and mechanical pavilion, especially for the production of heavy machined boilers for the thermoelectric power stations and the factory assembly of lifting appliances.

This company helped to build many dams, bridges, ports, including the Dock 13 or Alfredo da Silva Dock at the Margueira Shipyard, overpasses and other major works where Mague cranes became a reference. The company also experienced periods of strong international expansion and is linked to a great vocational training. Part of the industrial start-up of Alverca do Ribatejo, the company played a major role in the population growth in the area. Mague closed in 1994.</text>

<text>On September 3, 1952, Engil, Sociedade de Engenharia Civil Lda was founded by Engineer Fernando José Saraiva and Mr. António Lopes de Almeida. The company remained named like this until the merger with Mota & Company at the turn of the millennium. The first construction carried out by the company was a 5th floor and a mansard, in a building on Rua Augusta, in Lisbon. As a result of its activity, in 1953 new partners joined the company, namely Engineers Simões Cúcio and António Valadas Fernandes. Engil's activity led to a turnaround, and the company was completely refounded and reinvented, thanks to the ingenuity and insight of Engineer Valadas Fernandes, who took the company's fate in hand.

The construction of the Castelo Branco Industrial and Commercial School is the first project outside the Lisbon region, being also worth mentioning the construction, in Mirandela, of the Bridge over the Tua River. The volume, quantity and diversity of Engil's works and activities led to the creation, in 1969, of a Northern Company Delegation in the city of Porto, which contributed to a better structuring of the company's action and its visibility at a national scale. Also in 1969, with the conclusion of the contract with Siemens-Baunnion, Engil acquired exclusively for Portugal, the patent for the Siemcrete sliding formwork system, which allowed it to carry out, from this date, numerous large works of silos and chimneys. In this sense, due to its size and technical characteristics, the construction of the Alto do Lindoso Dam is a milestone in the history of the great works built by the company in the twentieth century. Another great example of Engil's presence in the greatest Portuguese construction milestones is the company's participation in the works of EXPO'98, having built, among very others, the Tower of São Gabriel, an ex-libris of the new modern pole of the city of Lisbon.

Mota & Companhia and Engil joined for the acquisition of Peruvian company Translei, exclusively to provide Engineering services related to the earthmoving and related works for the exploration of mining concessions. However, this was the first step for what would happen not long after. On July 23, 1999, the Mota family companies launched a takeover bid for the entire capital of Engil SGPS, which resulted in the formation of the Mota-Engil Group in 2000, an operation that gave rise to the largest Portuguese construction company and a reference in the transport concessions sector, being the group formed under the presidency of António Mota.

Click on the selected works below to know more about them:

Edifício "Castil"
Parque de Ensilagem da Trafaria
Barragem do Alto Lindoso

</text>

<text>The Sociedade de Construções Amadeu Gaudêncio was founded in 1930, initially bearing the name of its founder, Amadeu Gaudêncio. In 1935 the designation of “Amadeu Gaudencio - Construção Civil” changed to the name that would be known for the rest of the century. The company was located at Rua Alexandre Braga, in Lisbon, where it remained throughout its existence. For sixty years the company grew in the Portuguese construction landscape, having reached 1500 employees among the construction works, offices and workshops of carpentry, sawmill and painting, installed in that same street. In a variety of advertisements, the company introduces itself as a specialist in civil construction, especially in the use of reinforced concrete, mechanical carpentry and, to a lesser relevance in the company, furniture construction and painting work.

Within the construction sector, the first work that would mark the portfolio of the Sociedade de Construções Amadeu Gaudêncio would be the Santa Maria Hospital, in Lisbon. A construction that began in 1940 and ended in 1953. However, other works are associated with the course of the company, such as Casa da Moeda, Nossa Senhora de Fátima church, headquarters of Banco Nacional Ultramarino, French Lycée, Chile square, Ford Lusitana e and Café Portugal, in Lisboa, Cineteatro Joaquim de Almeida, in Montijo, and São João Hospital, in Porto. Although not building the entire infrastructure, this company was also linked to the construction of the Portela Airport, in Lisbon, between 1942 and 1949.

In 1975 the company, for legal reasons, became a Limited Liability Company. Names such as Engineer Manuel Bravo and Engineer Almeida Henriques are directly associated with the company's history, especially after the founder's departure from the company, in 1977. In 1995, the year in which they celebrated 60 years of existence, the company went bankrupt and put an end to half a century of buildings that marked Portugal during the Estado Novo dictatorship and the beginning of the democratic regime, from 1974.

Click on the selected works below to know more about them:

Hospital de Santa Maria, Lisboa
Café Portugal, Lisboa
Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Porto
Mercado de Arroios, Lisboa</text>
