Profile

On September 3, 1952, Engil, Sociedade de Engenharia Civil Lda was founded by Engineer Fernando José Saraiva and Mr. António Lopes de Almeida. The company remained named like this until the merger with Mota & Company at the turn of the millennium. The first construction carried out by the company was a 5th floor and a mansard, in a building on Rua Augusta, in Lisbon. As a result of its activity, in 1953 new partners joined the company, namely Engineers Simões Cúcio and António Valadas Fernandes. Engil's activity led to a turnaround, and the company was completely refounded and reinvented, thanks to the ingenuity and insight of Engineer Valadas Fernandes, who took the company's fate in hand.

The construction of the Castelo Branco Industrial and Commercial School is the first project outside the Lisbon region, being also worth mentioning the construction, in Mirandela, of the Bridge over the Tua River. The volume, quantity and diversity of Engil's works and activities led to the creation, in 1969, of a Northern Company Delegation in the city of Porto, which contributed to a better structuring of the company's action and its visibility at a national scale. Also in 1969, with the conclusion of the contract with Siemens-Baunnion, Engil acquired exclusively for Portugal, the patent for the Siemcrete sliding formwork system, which allowed it to carry out, from this date, numerous large works of silos and chimneys. In this sense, due to its size and technical characteristics, the construction of the Alto do Lindoso Dam is a milestone in the history of the great works built by the company in the twentieth century. Another great example of Engil's presence in the greatest Portuguese construction milestones is the company's participation in the works of EXPO'98, having built, among very others, the Tower of São Gabriel, an ex-libris of the new modern pole of the city of Lisbon.

Mota & Companhia and Engil joined for the acquisition of Peruvian company Translei, exclusively to provide Engineering services related to the earthmoving and related works for the exploration of mining concessions. However, this was the first step for what would happen not long after. On July 23, 1999, the Mota family companies launched a takeover bid for the entire capital of Engil SGPS, which resulted in the formation of the Mota-Engil Group in 2000, an operation that gave rise to the largest Portuguese construction company and a reference in the transport concessions sector, being the group formed under the presidency of António Mota.
